Sarmad is a Rotterdam-based independent platform for research, publishing, collective thinking, and pedagogy. It has been evolving since its foundation in 2012, from a magazine for experimental image making into a platform working across different disciplines of visual arts, architecture, writing, and performance.
Sarmad works on long-term projects through research, curation, publishing, workshops, and podcasts. The project Un-Making Image (2017-2020) investigated the interrelations of image and power. Currently, Sarmad is focused on the intersection of images, norms, and power. The publications of Sarmad, particularly the Sarmad Book Series, are a representation of the various activities carried out in and by the platform. Sarmad cooperates with national and international art institutions, universities, art collectives and individual artists and practitioners.
Sarmad is a project by Alireza Abbasy and Golnar Abbasi (co-founders), and Arvand Pourabbasi (editor).
