On Saturday 13 June Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art presents a special afternoon on Character Is Fate, an installation by artist Willem de Rooij. Character Is Fate showcases the horoscope that Piet Mondrian had made in 1911, the year that he was about to leave his homeland, the Netherlands, to move to Paris. In this period of artistic and personal transformation he asked theosopher Adriaan van de Vijsel for astrological advice. The original document of this horoscope reading has been given on loan by the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD) in The Hague and is displayed for one year at Witte de With, to celebrate our twenty-fifth anniversary.

The installation by Willem de Rooij forms a special display system that relates to the solar calendar, allowing for the birth chart to be illuminated by the sun, best seen from 2.15pm to 2.30pm each day.
On Saturday 19 June we offer a guided tour through Witte de With, followed by a presentation of our special guest Wietse Coppes (Mondriaan expert at the RKD) on Piet Mondrian, and how the horoscope reading has changed the artist’s life.
