Pierre Bismuth’s work explores the multiple manifestations and products of knowledge and culture. Through a practice of inversion, proliferation and repetition, Bismuth challenges any logic of efficiency and usefulness, and takes a critical look at our contemporary condition.
For his recent collaborations with Witte de With (in the current exhibition Melanchotopia and in the previous show, The End of Money), Bismuth developed two new works that criticize the dogmatic role technical development can take in shaping our society. Following this chain of thought, Pierre Bismuth’s master class will focus on the following questions: What makes / creates authority and status? How can the sabotage of common sense and formal eclecticism lead to the development of a methodology? These notions will be addressed with regards to both the public realm and the artistic legacy.
