Alia Farid presents a solo exhibition as part of Witte de With’s 2020 Winter season. Her mesmerizing films explore contemporary urban life against the backdrop of colonial histories and contemporary life. ‘At the Time of the Ebb’ was shot on the island of Qeshm, Iran, and stages a melancholic meandering through the local rituals of Nowruz Sayadeen (Fisherman’s New Year). The costumes and rites of the surviving festival tradition show an island living attuned to ancient seasonal cycles amid the fast-paced worlds of the Arabian Gulf.
