Athos Bulcão (1918-2008, Brazil) was an artist and sculptor who integrated art and architecture with his monumental tile designs. In the 1940s, he assisted Cândido Portinari, before moving to Paris, where he lived until 1949. Upon his return to Brazil, he became a collaborator of the construction of Brasília – the new capital of Brazil, founded in 1960 – taking part in several of the architect Oscar Niemeyer's projects. Much of Bulcão’s work is devoted to the public, as one encounters his designs on the facades of governmental buildings. His tiles build a rhythmic, colorful, and playful pattern, created from repetitive forms turned in different directions. These facades are found all over Brasilia, and have made him one of the most well-known 20th-century Brazilian artists. His enduring legacy is preserved by the Athos Bulcão Foundation.
