Bert van Meggelen (b. 1946) is Director of MAAT-werk, bureau for urban programs and culture-based planning, and a former director of the Rotterdam Academy of Architecture. In 2001, Van Meggelen was the artistic director of Rotterdam Cultural Capital of Europe in 2001, which took the polymorphous, multidisciplinary, multicultural ‘Rotterdam is many cities’ as its motto, inspired by Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino. “Bottom-up” programming represented and inquired into urban society of the future.
Van Meggelen is frequently invited to serve as an adviser and to participate in debates and committees in the realm of urban projects and culture-based planning. He is currently Chairman of the EuroPAN Nederland Foundation, a Europe-wide competition for young architects in the fields of architecture and urban planning.
