Cevdet Erek (b. 1974, Istanbul) is a visual artist and musician who lives and works in Istanbul. His work is characterized by a marked use of rhythm and site specificity. His projects combine video, sound and images, often in an attempt to alter the viewer’s perception and experience of a given environment. He merges rational systems, like measurements of space, time and music tempo, with instinctive impulses thereby levelling the gap between two supposedly opposing spheres.

He has exhibited at venues including MAK, Vienna (2012), Tate Modern, London (2011), Arter, Istanbul (2010) and Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2006) among others. His solo exhibition Week, was presented by Kunsthalle Basel, Switzerland (2012). Erek also participated in dOCUMENTA(13) with Room of Rhythms, the Istanbul Biennial (2003, 2011) and the 7th Asia Pacific Triennial (2012). His book SSS – The Shore Scene Soundtrack was published by BAS Artist Books, Istanbul in 2008.

Cevdet Erek studied architecture at the Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts Istanbul (1992-1999), sound engineering and design at the Center for Advanced Studies in Music of Istanbul Technical University (2000-2003), and holds a PhD from Istanbul ITU MIAM, Centre for Advanced Studies in Music. Erek was awarded the Uriot Prize with project Studio (2005) during his residency at Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunst (2005-2006, Amsterdam) and the Nam Jun Paik Prize (2012). He is also the co-founder of the avant-garde rock act Nekropsi.
