Duan Jianyu (b. in 1970) is an artist who currently lives and works in Guangzhou. In 1995 she graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. The brushwork and color in Duan’s work bizarrely bring us to a blurry and slightly annoying place. Her paintings recall boundaries that are mentally non-tangible in our daily lives, yet they precisely evoke the feeling of living in modern China: dynamic and tacky.
Duan Jianyu is currently teaching at the Fine Arts Department of South China Normal University, and she is the winner of Chinese Contemporary Art Awards 2010. Her work has been exhibited at, Mingsheng Art Museum, Shanghai, China; Sainsbury Centre For Visual Arts, UK; the Third Guangzhou Triennial, Guangdong Museum of Art, Guangzhou, China; Kunsthaus Graz, Graz; Para-Site Art space, Hong Kong; 50th International Art Exhibition of the Biennale di Venezia,Venezia, 2003; GwangJu Biennale, Korea, 2002, amongst others.
