Keren Cytter (b. 1977, Israel) is best known for her experimental video works that illuminate the social and cultural codes of communication. Often her works are based on templates of literary or cinematic classics, simultaneously reflecting the influence of the media. From this she creates her own signature visual language that is likewise virtuous and direct, melodramatic and dry and that aims at what we believe to be our “private”.
Her video works were shown in solo exhibitions in institutions such as Frankfurter Kunstverein, Kunsthalle Zurich (both 2005), Kunst-Werke Berlin (2006), MUMOK Vienna (2007), Witte de With, Rotterdam (2008) and at Le Plateau Paris (2009), Kunsthaus Baselland and Moderna Museet, Stockholm (2010), Kunstverein Munich (2011), Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen (2014), Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (2015), Künstlerhaus Halle für Kunst & Medien, Graz (2016) as well as in numerous group exhibitions worldwide (such as Making Worlds curated by Daniel Birnbaum at Venice Biennial 2009, the Lyon and the Tel Aviv Biennials, 2006). Keren Cytter won the Baloise Art Statement Award at Art Basel and was nominated in 2009 for the prestigious Preis der Nationalgalerie für junge Kunst in Berlin.
