Lara Almarcegui (b. 1972, ES), living and working in Rotterdam, has been developing works over the course of twenty years that question the frontier between urban decay and urban renewal; making visible what tends to remain unnoticed. While focusing on abandoned spaces and structures that are undergoing a process of transformation, Almarcegui also investigates the different connections that can be established between architecture and urban planning. Through a continuous inquiry into the current state of peripheral areas – their development, use, and decay – Almarcegui sets up a discourse surrounding the diverse elements that constitute the physical reality of an ever-evolving urban landscape. Almarcegui’s work is included in numerous international public and private collections, and has been exhibited widely in both solo and group shows. Exhibitions include: representing Spain at the 55th Venice Biennale (2013), solo shows at New Bridge Gallery (2014), CREDAC (2013), MUSAC (2013), Stedelijk Museum (2012), TENT (2011); and group shows Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento Rovertero (2014), Kunsthaus (2014), the 1st Aichi Triennial (2013) and Manifesta 9, among others.
