Mark Lewis (Hamilton, Canada, 1957) lives in London. His work proposes that film may be understood in terms of classical ideas of genre. His work encourages viewers to remain aware of the clichés, conventions, and fragmentary nature of film, and how the genres have been constructed historically and in relation to other visual arts, particularly painting. By applying the techniques of deconstruction and reflection to traditional methods of presenting imagery, the artist tries to expose shortcomings in our actual perception so that we can detect and understand them.
