Markus Schinwald (b. 1973, Austria) lives and works in Vienna and Los Angeles. He studied at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Linz and Humboldt University in Berlin. His artistic practice comprises a variety of media: video art, sculpture, painting, choreography and photography. His work deals with the notions of the body as a cultural construct, psychological connection with space and the body, and dysfunctionality and instability. His solo exhibitions include CAPC Musée d’Art Contemporain, Bordeaux (2013); Overture, Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2013); Animal Works, Sala Verónicas, La Conservera Centro de Arte Contemporáneo, Murcia (2012); Lentos Museum, Linz (2010); and the 54th Venice Biennale, Austrian Pavilion, Venice (2010). He also participated in group shows, such as Dés-Orienté(s), ISELP, centre d’art contemporain, Brussels (2013); Theatre Of The World, Museum of Old and New Art, Hobart (2013); BEYOND TIME, INTERNATIONAL VIDEO ART TODAY, Kulturhuset Stockholm (2012); Le Surréalisme, c’est moi! Hommage to Salvador Dalí, Kunsthalle Vienna (2011); Contemporary Art Musuem Kumamoto/Kyushu (2010); and Body/Space Mechanics, De Hallen Haarlem (2010).
