Saâdane Afif (b. 1970, France) lives and works in Berlin. His ‘post-conceptual’ work deals with interpretation, exchange and circulation. It takes multiple forms (performance, objects, sculptures, text, posters and works in neon) with the exhibition as a pretext for production or activation. For one of his on-going projects Lyrics, he asks artist friends, curators or critics to write text or a song inspired by his artwork, and through this process displaces his authorship as an artist. The texts or statements are often transferred to the walls using holographic self-adhesive paper. Afif’s practice is rooted in music: scores, instruments, amplifiers, speakers, microphones, concerts are part of his vocabulary or media. Other recurring interests include the passing of time (skulls, clocks), appropriation, remakes or repetitions and the displacement of meaning, and the critique of institutions. Afif’s selected solo exhibitions include Blue Time, Blue Time, Blue Time…, Institut d’art contemporain, Lyon, (2013); The Fairytale Recordings, RaebervonStenglin, Zürich (2011); Anthologie de l’humour noir, Prix Marcel Duchamp, Centre Georges Pompidou,Paris and Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt am Main, (2010/2012); A Lecture, A Recording & A Few Witnesses, OPA, Guadalaja, Mexico (2010); Technical Specifications, Witte de With, Rotterdam (2008). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, such as The Present Order is the Disorder of the Future, Museum Kurhaus Kleve, Kleve, (2013); Reflecting on Relfection, Galeri Mana, Istanbul, (2012); Made in Germany Zwei. Kunstverein, Hannover, (2012) and Documenta XII, Kassel, (2007).
