Monica Bonvicini (b. 1965, Italy) is a Venice-born artist who has been living and working in Berlin since the end of the 1980s. She studied in Berlin and at Cal Arts, Valencia, California. Since 2003 she holds a position as Professor for Performative Arts and Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Monica Bonvicini confronts audiences with drawings, sculptures, installations, videos and photographs that explore specific conventions and investigate the relationship between space, power and gender. Through the reflection on gender issues, often reinforced by biting humor, her work addresses the issues of ‘building’. She has participated in many solo and group exhibitions, among others at the Berlin Biennale for contemporary art (1998, 2004) and the Venice Bienniale (1999, 2005, 2011); and more recently at Kunsthalle Mainz (2013), the Städtisches Museum Abteiberg, Moenchengladbach (2012); Deichtorhallen / Sammlung Falckenberg, Hamburg (2012) and at the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington DC . She was recently awarded the Roland Prize for Public Art 2012, which honours new thinking and action fields for public art. In 2010, Bonvicini won the public competition of the Handball Plaza Light Art Commission in the framework of the London Olympic Games 2012, where she realized a large-scale, permanent outdoor sculpture RUN. In 2005 she received the Preis der Nationalgalerie für junge Kunst, Berlin. In 2007, she was assigned the public commission for HUN LIGGER – SHE LIES (a site-specific sculpture floating on the water in front of the New Opera House), Oslo.
